๐Ÿ“‹General Survey and Measurements

General Survey Characteristics

๐Ÿ‘ค The General Survey is a Study of the whole person

  • ๐Ÿฉบ Covers general health state & obvious physical characteristics
  • ๐Ÿ‘€ Provides an overall impression
  • ๐Ÿ“Š Includes objective parameters that apply to the whole body, not just one system
  • ๐Ÿค Even while introducing yourself and shaking hands โ†’ you are collecting data
  • ๐Ÿ“ During health history, vitals, and measurements โ†’ note these 4 areas:
    1. ๐Ÿ‘ค Physical appearance
    2. ๐Ÿ— Body structure
    3. ๐Ÿšถ Mobility
    4. ๐ŸŽญ Behavior

๐Ÿงพ Objective Data: Physical Appearance

  • ๐ŸŽ‚ Age: Appears stated age
  • โšง Sex: Sexual development appropriate for age/gender
  • ๐ŸŽจ Skin color: Even tone; intact; consistent with genetic background
  • ๐Ÿ‘€ Overall appearance: General statement of distress (present/absent)
  • ๐Ÿง  Level of consciousness: Alert & oriented (person, place, time); responds appropriately
  • ๐Ÿ™‚ Facial features: Symmetrical with movement

๐Ÿ— Objective Data: Body Structure

  • ๐Ÿ“ Stature: Height within normal range for age & heritage
  • โš–๏ธ Nutrition: Weight normal for height/build; even fat distribution
  • ๐Ÿ”„ Symmetry: Body parts equal bilaterally & proportional
  • ๐Ÿง Posture: Stands comfortably erect (age-appropriate)
  • ๐Ÿช‘ Position: Comfortable sitting; arms relaxed; head turned to examiner

๐Ÿšถ Objective Data: Mobility

  • ๐Ÿ‘ฃ Gait: Base as wide as shoulders
  • ๐Ÿฆถ Foot placement: Accurate, smooth, even, balanced; symmetric arm swing
  • ๐Ÿคธ Range of motion: Full mobility, deliberate, accurate, smooth, coordinated
  • โŒ Involuntary movement: None present

๐ŸŽญ Objective Data: Behavior

โ€ฃ
๐Ÿ™‚ Facial Expression:
โ€ฃ
๐Ÿ˜€ Mood & Affect:
โ€ฃ
๐Ÿ—ฃ Speech:
โ€ฃ
๐Ÿ‘— Dress:
โ€ฃ
๐Ÿงผ Personal Hygiene:

โš–๏ธ Objective Data: Measurements

โ€ฃ
๐Ÿ‹๏ธ Weight
โ€ฃ
๐Ÿ“ Height
โ€ฃ
๐Ÿงฎ Body Mass Index (BMI)
โ€ฃ
๐Ÿ“ Waist & Hip Circumference

๐Ÿ‘ต Developmental Competence (Aging Adults)

  • ๐Ÿง Posture & Gait: Normal age-related changes may alter posture and walking style.
  • โš–๏ธ Measurements: Weight and height decrease are common with age (bone loss, muscle changes, spinal compression).

โš ๏ธ Abnormalities in Body Weight & Proportion

๐Ÿ‘ถ Dwarfism

  • Hypopituitary dwarfism โ†’ (Non-genetic) Deficiency of growth hormone โ†’ short stature, delayed puberty.
  • Achondroplastic dwarfism โ†’ Genetic disorder affecting bone growth โ†’ short limbs, normal trunk.

๐Ÿ“ Gigantism vs Acromegaly (Hyperpituitarism)

  • Gigantism โ†’ Excess growth hormone in childhood โ†’ abnormal tallness.
  • Acromegaly โ†’ Excess growth hormone in adulthood โ†’ enlarged bones of face, hands, feet.

๐Ÿฝ Anorexia Nervosa

  • Psychiatric disorder โ†’ severe weight loss, malnutrition, body image distortion.

๐Ÿงฌ Endogenous Obesity (Cushingโ€™s Syndrome)

  • Excess cortisol โ†’ central obesity, moon face, buffalo hump, thin limbs.

๐Ÿฆด Marfan Syndrome

  • Genetic connective tissue disorder โ†’ tall stature, long arms/legs/fingers, cardiac complications.
